Lake City Gold Rush Alpine Loop Poker Run
1 - 4 September
Page last updated
It's definitely not too early to start planning to attend the
Lake City Gold Rush Alpine Loop Poker Run. The Lake City website is
http://www.lakecity.com/ then click on events. There is not a link to the
Poker Run, but a contact number is 970-944-2734.
We will be leaving Friday late morning, September 1st. Lake City is about 4 1/2
hours from Colorado Springs. For those not familiar where Lake City is...Lake
City is located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, about 55
miles south of Gunnison on State Highway 149. Let's plan on a potluck for
dinner Friday night at T Bears Campground (more on T Bears below). More details
on the potluck closer to event.
Saturday, September 2nd is the Poker Run. Last year the cost was $25 a hand.
The sponsors had snacks and beverages at the stops along the route. They did a
great job! The first part of the run is on the highway. A police escort is
provided as a part of the run for this part. This is the only time you can
legally complete the entire loop on your ATV.
http://www.alpineloop.com/HTML/index.html and
http://www.sangres.com/byways/alpine.htm are sites I found about the loop.
Sunday, September 3rd, is for free riding. Also, there a lot of hiking
opportunities in the area.
Monday, September 4th return home.
We have reserved a site at T Bears RV Campground.
http://www.tbearscampground.com/, phone number 970-944-2920. They have RV
sites, Tent sites, and Camper Cabins. We enjoyed our stay there last year and
when I called a couple weeks ago, they remembered us. Mention that your with
the Watson's when reserving and they'll try to put us all together. The
campground is not that big, so no worries if we are not together. You can ride
to the Poker Run start and to the Alpine Loop from T Bears. We rode in town
last year without any problems, but technically you should not. When I spoke
with the Poker Run contact he said during this weekend you shouldn't have any
problems riding in town, just go slow and be respectful.
There are other campgrounds in Lake City, too. You can link to them from the
Lake City website mentioned above.
Please plan for all types of weather! Last year we got snow at the higher
elevations. You cross over 2, 12,000+ passes. The loop is about 65 miles so
carry extra gas if you think you'll need it. The views are amazing. The area
is great.
Please join us. Reply to me by clicking
HERE if you are planning to go
and I'll start getting a headcount together. Also, let me know where you plan
to stay.
Cheers,
The Watson's
