4th of July Campout and Rides

 Page last updated

This is to provide initial information on the 4th of July campout and rides that are now scheduled for the CQR club chapters.  The dates will begin on Wednesday,June 28th and go to Tuesday, July 4th. This event is sponsored by Wayne & Dawn Sturtz and Bob & Cathy Perry.

The critical link in this campout is getting an accurate count and type of camping rig/tent/etc as early as possible so that we obtain enough ground space and common area to accommodate our group comfortably.  I would like to know by Friday 6-16 as we are making another coordination trip on the 17th and 18th to the site for ride planning/layout.  We will be able to hold the areas thru Friday night the 30th and Saturday the 1st, but beyond that we will probably lose unused space.

The elevation for this area is 8,000 to 10,000 feet, lots of easy to moderate riding, and at least 2 distance rides that we will plan as club rides.  We will have a group cookout on Saturday night and a group breakfast on Monday morning, additional info to follow.  The town of Grand Lake is 4-5 miles for supplies, ice, gas, etc and we will publish water and dump station  availability in town.  Camping will be free with no power, water or sewer. There is an outhouse type brick building near our camp area, and also at the main parking area a mile away.  We can ride from camping directly onto the trails.  The more campers we can get in the sites starting Wednesday and/or as early as possible, the better.  There is a keen need for bug sprays as  the mosquitoes are quite heavy in the area.

Please call one of us with any questions and e-mail either of us with your plans for this outing, and date of arrival as best you can.

My e-mail is bobncathy@NOSPAMINGadelphia.net, For phone contact information, please see our email SUBJECT: 4th of July Campout & Riding in Grand Lake, CO, dated 4 JUNE 2006. Wayne's e-mail is wayneasturtz@NOSPAMMINGyahoo.com. Remove the word "NOSPAMMING" from the above email addresses.

UPDATE!!!!

This update on the referenced camp-out and riding is to provide additional
information and a three page scanned map and write up detailing the area.

We have been in contact with the USFS Recreation Planner for that area and
he provided the following information that he requested be disseminated and
enforced within our group:

A. There is absolutely no fireworks including items like sparklers
and snakes in the entire forest service area. They are expecting the fire
danger to be extremely high, and there will be a zero tolerance toward
fireworks.

B. While currently they do allow fires in fire pits in the camping
areas, the ranger was not optimistic that open fires/flames would be allowed
during the holiday weekend. Likewise if the ban takes affect, there will be
a zero tolerance policy. Tickets with fines and/or jail time would be
levied.

C. Two areas exist that are bordered by numerous authorized riding
trails called Never Summer Wilderness and Bowen Gulch Protection Area.
These areas are posted as no motorized access of any type and again, a zero
tolerance policy is always in affect for these areas.

D. For those interested in authorized fireworks, Grand Lake puts on
a very impressive fireworks display at the lake in town.

E. The last area that the Ranger covered is that the holiday weekend
is expected, as always, to be very busy. Accordingly rides scheduled or
private must be done with everyone's safety in mind as this area is
multi-use lands. Stay the Trails, and helmet and safety gear will be
required of anyone participating in this camp out and rides.

The area that we have chosen to camp in has an area conducive to "community"
gatherings. As noted in the initial e-mail we would like to organize a
group dinner on Saturday and a group breakfast on Monday morning. We will
have some small grills, tables, lamps, etc in an area and everyone is
welcome to bring the meats that they would like to cook for their family, a
side dish for 4 to 6 people to share, and there own place
settings/beverages. For those that would like to get together for other
meals, that certainly is possible and preferred.

Wayne and Dawn and Bob and I are going back up to the area Saturday and
Sunday, 17th and 18th, to pre-plan the scheduled rides and to mark out map
areas that are off limits, etc. We plan to have individual small maps of
the riding areas as well as a large map that would be located in the camping
area for everyone's information. Additionally, we will brief information
and answer questions at the up coming meeting, June 21st.

We will be inquiring about fresh water, dump stations, and propane sources
this weekend, but if you have any other questions that need to be researched
please let us know by Friday mid day and we will be happy to get the info
for you.

Scheduled attendees thus far are:
	Shelby and Judy
	Dave and Robin
	Larry and Bernice
	Cal Ward
	Wayne and Dawn
	Bob and Cathy
